There are many reasons for which people change their names such as after marriage (especially women) and astrological or numerical cause. On the other hand, it has also been seen that some people also change their names by changing their name, that it brings good in their life and adds some letters in their name to bring some fate.

Placing Advertisement

Now, you have made the Affidavit, place an ad in the national newspaper for your name change. Those who are married women, they should also mention the name of their husband and the permanent address in the notification.

Gazette Notification

To publish your name in the official gazette of your state, you will need to follow the steps given:

First of all, you need to go to your local government press or department that appears after the gazette notification.

Now, collect two copies of ‘Deed Changing Surname Form’ and fill it with all necessary and valid details carefully.

Go and get the contact number of the authorized person of the department and ask for help for the gazette notification.

1. Who can change the name?

Anyone who is a citizen of India whether staying in India or abroad can change his / her name.

2. Can I change my name in my educational certificates?

70% of comments are same questions. Please note that CBSE / ICSE/State Boards do change name in certificates even if you have a Gazette published. They need a Court Order from your District Court. Obtaining this Order is very difficult and is almost impossible.

3. What is the use of name change publication in Gazette?

If you have changed your name then you have to complete the legal process for same. Name in your educational certificates and Birth Certificate do not change once they are issued. Other docuements e.g. Passport, VoterID, Driving License, Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Bank Account etc. you can obtain with new name. However, if you submit your education certificate then you have to provide copy of your Gazette and accordingly new name will be considered.

4. Can I add / change surname with my name?

To add a surname, your father/brother/mother must be using the surname then only you can else not. e.g. your name is Rakesh Kumar and your want to add “Sharma” as your surname. You can do this subject to your father / brother / mother must be using “Sharma” as their surname. If not using but you want to use and your caste is Brahmin then affidavit should be counter signed by Tehsildar/SDM.

5. Can I remove my surname ?

Yes. Suppose your name is Rakesh Prasad Tiwari and you want to remove your surname “Tiwari”. You can do this through Gazette name change process.

6. I am a minor i.e. below 18 years old? Can I change my name?

Yes. You can. Application by your father / mother / guardian to be submitted.

7. Can I change my name more than one time?

No. Legally it is not permissible to change name more than once.

8. How can I change name or correct spellings of my father/mother name in education certificates?

Sometimes you see that there is either speling mistake or entirely different name in your eduation certifiate /PAN etc. This can be rectivied by publishing the same in Gazette. This type of publication in Gazette is called “Public Notice”. It is costlier because goverment fee is more and newspaper advertisement is costly.

9. After name change can I apply for Government Job with new name?

Yes. Once your name change in published in gazette you can start writing new name in all your job applications. If you are aleady a government employee then you have to intimate to your HR Deppt. about this and get name changed.

10. I am government employee can I change my name?

The Central Gazette must be published for the new alteration to be recognised in all significant government documents, therefore publication in that journal is required. The religion change declaration will be published in the e-Gazette once the Gazette application has been submitted and has been approved.
